That is why Eurocord-Slovakia is putting into effect the Siblings Donor Cord Blood Program. It is focused on the collection and cryoconservation of cord blood aimed to help ill siblings. Collection of cord blood for siblings happens on the basis of a request from the doctor of the ill child and the transplantation committee. It is recommended as a treatment for leukemia, aplastic anemia, disorders of metabolism and immunity etc. This committee will also decide about the consequent use of the cord blood for transplantation.

Sibling collections are realized in all Slovakian hospitals and are free for families. All costs will be paid by Eurocord-Slovakia. Every year around 20 collections of cord blood are meant specifically for an ill older sibling. Some collections were already realized from twins.

Slovakian physicians have good experience with cord blood transplantation. So far sibling cord blood has been used to treat children suffering from chronic leukemia, Blackfan-Diamond anemia, aplastic anemia and the inherited disorder adrenoleukodystrophy.
