How to Donate Cord Blood |
By donating your child's cord blood you can help patients in need of hematopoietic cells transplantation. Donating cord blood is voluntary and free. It is a humane deed. Donated cord blood is at the disposal for patients around the world; is not reserved for your child.
Similarly to donating blood for transfusion, the donor must undergo a selection process based on certain criteria dictated by legislative and international requirements of transplant centers. Statistics show that only around 30% of the donated cord blood is suitable to be stored. The goal of such strict selection is the protection of the patient – the future recipient of cord blood. Step by Step • The hospital staff will fill in the documentation necessary for cord blood donation: Informed consent and Medical Questionnaire. • The actual collection of cord blood is safe and painless for you and your child. As the doctor's main concern is the well being of the mother and child, in certain specific cases it is not possible to make collection. • A sample of your blood will be also collected for the mandatory testing of infectious diseases. • Collected cord blood is sent off to a processing facility where it is processed, tested and cryoconserved. • If the blood is suitable for public storage, after 6-12 months we will send you Reply Slip concerning your child's health to be filled in by child’s pediatrician (no examinations are needed). If we find out cord blood does not meet the international exchange requirements we have to discard it. It doesn't just get thrown out though; it can be used for scientific research or used to test new technologies of cord blood processing. Exclusion Criteria for Cord Blood Donation • Inadequate medical care during the pregnancy • Family health history do not passed based on Medical Questionnaire • Multiple birth • A genetic / developmental defect of the fetus • Temperature above 38°C 24 hours before birth • Use of antibiotics or antimycotics due to a proven infection at the time of delivery • Birth weight under 3500 g • Infected amniotic fluid • Use of epidural anesthesia or Caesarian section due to health complications of the mother/child • Water birth or a different non-standard birth |
