In 2007 – 2011 Project Extension of Slovak Cord Blood Registry is co-financed by a grant through the EEA Financial Mechanism, the Norwegian Financial Mechanism and by Government of Slovak Republic.
The aim of the project is to prepare at least 400 Cord Blood Units (CBU) for unrelated hematopoietic stem cells transplantation. Overall purpose of this project is to increase odds of finding suitable HLA-compatible (tissue matching) unrelated donor for patients in need of hematopoietic stem cells transplantation. An increase of Slovak cord bloods in international database might be an efficient way to increase the number of unique HLA phenotypes. Complete process of preparing of CBU involved voluntary donors recruiting, cord blood collection, processing, testing, typing and long term storing. In a frame of this project cord blood is collected in all regions of Slovakia. In addition, a significant part of the project is maintaining a database of acquired data and submitting them into international databases BMDW to enable search for a potential compatible donors for patients in all transplant centers worldwide. |
